Rnd 5: 1 hdc in each st all the way around (total of 36 sts)
Rnd 6: [hdc in each of the next 2 sts; 2 hdc in next st] all the way around (total of 48 sts)

Rnd 8: [hdc in each of the next 7 sts; 2 hdc in next st] all the way around (total of 54 sts)
Rnd 9: In the first stitch of this row, work 2 hdc, then 1 hdc all the way around (total of 55 sts)
Rnd 10: 1 hdc in each st all the way around (55 sts)
Keep going all the way around in the same manner as Rnd 10 until you achieve the desired length (approximately 22 rounds)
Do not break yarn and continue to work the first ear flap
Earflaps
Count out 12 stitches from where your hook is (you can mark it with a marker if needed)
Row 1: ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in each of the next 11 sts; turn (12 sts)
Row 2: ch 2; hdc in each st; turn (12 sts)
Row 3: ch 2; first hdc2tog; hdc in each of the next 8 sts; last hdc2tog; turn (10 sts)
Continue row 3 until you have 4 sts left. Fasten off.
Second Earflap
Count
out 12 sts from the first earflap on the back side of your hat. Join
your yarn and work the same pattern as the first earflap.
Eyes
Hook size 5.0 mm
Make 2
With white color yarn, chain 5. Slip st into first chain to form a ring; Chain 3
10 dc inside ring, join with a slip st to 2nd chain in first ch3; Chain 3
2 dc in each st around for a total of 20dc. join with a slip st to top of chain 3
Break yarn and fasten off.
With gray wool, join to white and chain 3
Do 2hdc all the way around for a total of 40 sts.
Break yarn and fasten off.
Attach
each eye to the hat with a whip stitch, centering it on the black
strip. I decided to add buttons because this hat was made a little
bigger and it's safer for an older child. I do not recommend putting
buttons on a hat for any children aged 4 and under.
If
you choose not to put buttons, you'll need to put black in the center of
each eye. To do this, do the chain 5 and slip st into first chain to
form a ring, chain 3. Do your 10 dc inside the ring and join. Break
your yarn and fasten off. Join white yarn and continue with the pattern
above.
Edging
Hook size 5.5 mm
You can use any color yarn you like, I chose red.
With right side of the hat facing you, join your yarn to the bottom of your earflap and work as follows:
Ch2, work a hdc in each st around. Break yarn and fasten off.
Ties
I chose to do a curly cue tail at the ends of the earflap but you can do a braid if desired.
For curly cues:
Attach yarn to end of the earflap
Ch 43, 3 dc in 4th ch from hook
Skip one ch
4 dc in next ch
Continue this pattern to the end (you'll be back at the top of the earflap).
Once you're at the top, do 4 dc in the same loop as where you attached the yarn, this helps to secure it better.
Mouth
I saw a picture where someone put a little tongue and I thought it was super cute but you can put just a mouth if you prefer.
For the tongue
Chain 6
1 dc in 3rd chain from hook
1 dc in next chain
1 hdc in last chain
Break yarn and fasten off.
For the mouth, I just did a back stitch in the shape I wanted. I then attached the tongue with a whip stitch.
MITTENS
The cold
weather is coming and it's time to start thinking about keeping warm.
Here is a pattern for mittens I've been using for years.
Hook size: 4mm & 5mm
Wool: Worsted weight 4
Starting on the cuff: Leave a tail for weaving in. Use smaller hook.

Ribbing
Ch 1, sc in back lp of each sc across; turn
Repeat 11 (15, 19, 23) more rows (Or to desired length. I like to do long ribbing for kids)
On the last row, change to larger hook, ch 1. Do not turn.
Palm
Working across the top of the ribbing, sc 13 (17, 21, 25) evenly spaced across; turn
Next

sc in each of 3 (4, 5, 6) sts evenly spaced; turn. 16 (21, 27, 30) sts.

Rep for 5 (9, 14, 16) more rows

1, sc2tog across; turn. Ch 1, sc in each rem 6 (7, 10, 11) sts. Leaving
a tail measuring approx 10 inches long, cut yarn and fasten off. Thread
tail into yarn needle and back through back lps of rem sts. Pull up
tightly to close opening and leave tail for sewing.
|
Thumb With
the RS facing and using larger hook, skip first sc row after ribbing.
Join yarn with a slip st between 2nd and 3rd rows on side edge. Ch 1, sc
in same row as joining and in each of next 3 (5, 6, 7) rows. Planning
to leave last 2 rows free, on opposite side of mitten sc in 4 (6, 7, 8)
rows - 8 (12, 14, 16) sts.
Rnd 1 Sc in 7 (11, 13, 15) sts, sc2tog.Rnd 2 Sc in 6 (10, 12, 14) sts, sc2tog. |
Work 1 (2, 4, 5) additional sc rnds on 6 (10, 12, 14) sts. For Child, Woman, and Man only Sc2tog around; then sc around on rem 5 (6, 7) sts. For All Sizes Cut
yarn and fasten off leaving about a 6 inches tail. Thread tail into
yarn needle and back through back lps of rem sts. Pull up tightly to
close opening. Turn to inside. Pull down firmly on tail, then weave into
fabric.
Finishing: Seam sides with tails. Hide ends. Ballet Slippers (0-3 months) Sole Row 1: Ch 18, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 16 chs, 5 sc in last ch. Working down opposite side of chain, sc in next 15 chs, 2 sc in last ch, join with sl st to first sc. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 16 sts, 2 hdc in each of the 5 sc, hdc around, 2 hdc in last 2 st, join with sl st. Row 3: Ch2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 18 st, 2 hdc in next 3 st, hdc around, 2 hdc in last 2 st, join with sl st. SIDES Row 4-5: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in each st around, join with sl st. Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 16 st, (dc next 2 st tog) 8 times, hdc around, join with a sl st. Row 7: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 15 sts, (dc next 2 st tog) 6 times, hdc around, join with sl st. Row 8: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 15 st, (dc next 2 tog) 3 times, sc around, join with sl st. Finish off. Straps Measure against child’s foot for best results. To attach straps, mark stitches evenly on either side of slipper before sewing. Sew elastic to either side with enough tension to keep slipper on child’s foot without being uncomfortable. NOTE: My elastic measured at about 3 ¼ inches from edge of slipper over foot to other edge.
